Vertical Routing with changes in Z

Although most vertical routing/milling does not require changes in Z when it is required WoodWOP can be ‘hard to convince’ to do it without doing lots of calculations.

So what is the problem?

The primary limitation comes in how contours are defined.  In the XY plane, we can define lines and arcs easily and WoodWOP interpolates these when machining.  WoodWOP and the machine cannot interpolate any ARCS that are not on this plane.  But is can interpolate or follow lines that alter in Z.

With ONGAA CAM, contours in any plane can be selected and machined as long as curves are defines as splines.  ONGAA CAM will convert a spline into a series of geometry elements which simulates interpolation.

Route Processes – Selection Options

vroute_details2Unlike WoodWOP, where contours and routing process are added in 2 separate steps, ONGAA CAM combines the process definition and the contour definition in the same panel.  This ensures that the information entered in the details is always directly related to this process only. In this section we will cover the route processes selection options (toolpath definition).

Contours generally start with the selection of a Vertex (start point).  After the start point is selected, it can be followed with one or more points or edges.

When edges are selected, the edge must be connected to the previous point (or edge).  ONGAA CAM will check for this connectivity when saving as a safety feature to ensure that contour elements are selected in the correct order.

SOLIDWORKS ‘Splines / Bcurves’ to WoodWOP contours.

If you have ever needed to create a smooth, ‘arbitrary’, curved contour in WoodWOP from a SOLIDWORKS model you have probably been a little disappointed with the results.  ‘It’s not smooth!’.

The primary reason is in how the spline is converted into the WoodWOP contour and not how it is machined.

Most conversion programs will convert points on the spline to accurate contour points but they connect the points with straight lines.  Only by reducing the distance between the points can the contour be improved.   ONGAA CAM takes the connecting line into account as well and if it is curved, it supplies WoodWOP with the information to define an ARC.  This arc simulates the actual spline much more closely.
